Our school is increasing in number of students receiving free and reduced-price lunch. This year, our school is up to 80% and growing. Many of the parents of my students are overwhelmed with trying to put food on their table and spend less time with their child with academic concerns. This year, I have found that the majority of my students have not received a (free) preschool education, and not prepared for the rigor of a Kindergarten classroom. Not being prepared with letters and sounds prior to Kindergarten entry finds a student below level and struggling for most, if not all, of the student's Kindergarten year. Students that are not reading by the end of Kindergarten are most always retained by our school district.
