Our school is high-poverty, where 90% of my students receive free lunch. We are a bilingual class. My awesome students learn not only in their native language of Spanish, but are learning how to speak and read in English as well! I am amazed by their dedication to not only excel in Spanish, but in their second language as well. The pressures that these 7 and 8 year-old students endure amaze me every year: not only do they have to do the core curriculum in Spanish, but also learn English at the same time. This is in the same amount of time that their monolingual peers learn one language; so you can imagine our busy, intense school day!
