My students are active and constantly on the move. We incorporate game breaks throughout the day, but it is still very hard for them to concentrate. With only 20 minutes of recess a day, these students do not have enough ways to release their creative energy. Because of this, many students look for alternative ways to release this energy.
My students love to be out of their seats when learning! They love to sit on the floor, in my rocking chair, on the counters, or stand up around the room... any place that allows them to move - which is not their hard desk seats. Alternative seating such as balance ball chairs to wiggle on will allow them to sit, focus, wiggle, and learn in a healthy environment!
This would motivate the students to come to school every day ready to learn. By incorporating the balance balls, wobble chairs, and stools into my classroom, my students will increase their brain activity, improve their well-being and posture (in addition to being more comfortable), and help me promote a positive learning environment.
Differentiation should not end at the learning materials, but should also extend to the learning environment: the furniture. Students sit still for too much of their day. It's my goal to change this. I want my students to have the opportunity to learn in a flexible setting.
