My classroom is located in a large school district with a transient population. Our building is over 60% free and reduced lunch. Our students come from a diverse population. Approximately 30% are on reading improvement plans with a larger percentage scoring below proficient in reading. I have worked hard this year to help them find a passion and love for reading. Our reading workshop allow students a good chunk of time every day to go deep into their book to practice what is taught in my daily mini-lesson.
My students are hard-working and persevere through many challenges in their home life. For many students coming to my classroom is their safe place and where they feel the most encouraged. Providing an opportunity to get out of their hard plastic chair and read in a comfortable bean bag will encourage them to cozy up with a book and continue making progress in their reading comprehension and vocabulary.
