My students have different gifts and they enjoy sharing them. They enjoy setting goals as they learn to self advocate. I do have a few students that are struggling and are several years behind. They sometimes leave class or refuse to come into my general ed class because they prefer to stay in their special ed classroom. They are self conscious of their math and reading skills. I spend time working with them and have even traded places with the special ed teacher to work with a student. I thank them for coming in but I want them to come in more often. Using technology independently can really help motivate these students and help them interact with their peers. Everyone in the class gets along and they support one another. I want all my students to feel this sense of community and belonging. Sixth grade is an important grade academically and socially.
