My students share a common experience of hospitalization for medical reasons and a common need for education that continues despite their health conditions. My students range from curious and impulsive preschoolers to older teenagers trying to figure out where to go after high school. Some have multiple disabilities and use pictures or gestures to communicate. Some come from foreign countries to receive medical care. Many fight to manage chronic conditions; many are what the state would call "at-risk" because of their socioeconomic backgrounds. Many are Brooklyn born and bred, and most have a sense of hope despite their challenging circumstances. All deserve the best I have to offer, whether they are learning English, learning to express their wants and needs, or trying to solve four-step equations.
