I work in a wonderful school that values the need to be a child and experience learning through art, dance, music, and experiences. Children thrive and feel valued, however for children with disabilities, the inability to read and or write at grade level can lead students to feel frustrated and inferior to their peers. For many of my students having access to a computer on demand would mean that they would have access to tools that turn their speech into written words, read their math assessments out loud to them, and give them the ability to check their spelling.
Special needs children should have instant access to technology when they need it, not just when it might be available. Our school has three carts of Chromebooks that are shared in the school as class sets, these are not allotted to the special education children individually. I have one student desktop in my room for 30 students who must share the computer and isolate themselves from their peers to be able to use it.
