Our school is Title I and 85% of the students are immigrants.
My 1st grade class is diverse with many cultural backgrounds. This year I have students from Rwanda, Somalia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mexico, Honduras, and the United States. 99% of my students are English as a Second Language Learners. My students really like reading, writing, and drawing but they really are excited when we work in science. We have learned how to work in small teams and are ready for more intense learning experiences. The hands-on modality of science allows the students to create a common language and understanding of the subject matter. They are exploring and building collaborative and social connections at the same time as they build their content skills.
