Each of my students has a disability that is mild or moderate, they learn at a pace slower than their typical peers. They need a lot of practice and repetition in order to retain the information. My classroom is made up of 21 boys and 5 girls, YES you read that right, I only have 5 girls. Needless to say, the boys love all things superheroes and they love to be rough and tough. Many of the boys in my class have social/emotional behaviors that are behind those of their typical peers. Many of my students have experienced more in their short little lives than most adults will ever experience in their lives. Daily, it breaks my heart to hear their stories, to see their anger, frustration, and how they don't have the words to express those emotions. They are surrounded by this each and every day in their homes. Each day as the students arrive, they get a high five or a huge and I engage them on their level. Most of the children come from a very low socioeconomic family.
