My current classroom setup is not ideal for several reasons. I have five mismatched bookshelves with about two baskets on each shelf. These baskets are what the students keep their textbooks in as well as folders with papers. They are all lined up against the back wall of the room and transitions are crowded and difficult with 36 bodies in there. On top of these bookshelves are racks with magazine files in them, where the students keep their writing. Again, when it is writing time, it is difficult for students to access their work with so many students trying to get their materials at the same time. Having the wall pockets and mobile organizers will eliminate crowding during transition times and will allow students to grab the work they need quickly and get started right away saving valuable learning time. I look forward to seeing students go to their "stations" where their work is located rather than 36 students pushing and shoving just to get what they need. Along with giving them a chance to save time and get started faster, it will lessen the likelihood of students pushing and shoving. One last reason, and one of the most important reasons I have for asking for the donation of these supplies is sheer safety. Teaching in California, we are aware that earthquakes can occur at any time. It is my fear that the five bookshelves I currently have could easily fall in an earthquake seriously hurting my students. If I am able to replace them with the rolling storage carts and the hanging wall files, it will create an immensely safer environment for my students for years to come.
