Although most of my students have their basic needs met, there are students that have social issues, feel bullied, or lack confidence. The book Wonder has a wonderful message that will serve as a great way to start the school year in building kindness, empathy, and friendship. While having a wonderful message, this story tackles relevant issues, such as bullying, which will engage my 5th graders. This will help us delve deeper through a novel study, building reading and comprehension skills and teach lessons about empathy, compassion, and acceptance of those who are different from us. Through the lessons garnered from this story, I hope students will grow as readers, and more importantly, help them develop a greater appreciation for the simple courage of friendship. This will help us start off our year with a good foundation and create a positive classroom environment where all students feel safe to learn, interact with their peers, and take risks to help them grow emotionally and academically. Please help me start the school year with this "Wonder"ful book! Thank you for your help.
