Adding flexible seating options to my classroom will allow my students to relax and be comfortable as they concentrate on improving their reading skills. Research has shown that this type of setting improves student concentration and collaboration. Offering this type of seating will give my kids a more authentic and modern working environment. They will be working on Social Studies topics independently daily and giving them this type of work space will help them remain on task.
Also, by creating a more welcoming environment, I hope that my students will find reading work more approachable and interesting. Often these students are reluctant about their additional reading work because they have previous negative experiences or they feel discouraged from years of struggle. I'm hoping by creating a classroom environment that is comfortable and even fun; they will feel more at home and invested in the work they are doing.
Students will be able to choose their seating for the day for their independent work. Options will include a bungee chair or a beanbag chair for students who like a more comfortable seat. They'll also be able to choose to work on the floor with pillows or on the comfortable rug so they can sprawl out and even lay down if they find that position helpful. There will also be stability balls for students who need to bounce and release energy as they work. By providing all of these options, I hope to provide my students an adaptable environment for their productive work.
