I teach 6th grade English Language Arts at the Joseph A. Browne Middle School in Chelsea, Massachusetts. Chelsea is diverse, urban community. Many of my students' families work multiple jobs to make ends meet and cannot afford to buy anything extra for their children for school and cannot afford to buy the required summer reading books.
Although almost my students came to me reading below grade level, I am very proud that all of my students have grown in their reading skills this year. I don’t want my students to digress in reading after all our hard work together! In order to prevent summer reading loss, students need to practice reading in the summer and they need books to do that.
