My seventh graders are active and curious students who enjoy the project-based, cross-curricular activities my teaching team creates. They moan and groan when a new novel or research project is introduced but dive in with enthusiasm when they discover something new.
This year, we implemented a school-wide reading initiative called R.E.D. (Read Every Day) that devotes 20 uninterrupted minutes of reading to every school day. I brought in bean bag and dorm chairs to encourage this love of reading. As the year progressed, I allowed students to use them during class, as well. For students who have difficulty sitting still for an hour-long class, I found some unused computer desks that could be raised to standing height. All of these components have helped to create a learning environment that encourages students to take ownership of their learning.
