These novels will function as an alternative view of the American Experience and, more pointedly, the search for the American Dream from the Asian American perspective. To be used in conjunction with teaching Fitzgerald's, The Great Gatsby, George Taika's graphic novel, They Called Us Enemy, offers a vastly different and more realistic take on searching for, and achieving, the American Dream. Given a majority of students in these classes are of Asian descent, this novel offers a host of new ways to enter into the academic conversation about the meaning, development, and changing nature of the American Dream as it is understood today. Additionally, because the novel is in the graphic form, it provides ample academic entry points and access to larger themes for ESL students and students who have difficulty with the primary text.
