My students are full of enthusiasm and wonder. Many of them have a very difficult time sitting still during their learning. I began the year knowing this because I looped with them. This means I taught them in second grade last year. Since I knew this I decided to begin the year in a different fashion. I created an open classroom. This means there are not traditional desks for students. Instead there are comfy chairs, like you may find in your living room. There are beanbags, carpet squares, bar stools, wiggle chairs, papasan chairs,pillows, and benches throughout the room. The students choose their best learning style. Some lay down, some stand, some sit. It is their choice all day. This has been an amazing success! Many of my students come from poverty and have very difficult home lives. They come to school hungry, distraught , and tired. My room offers a safe haven for them. They can come in and feel safe, secure, and loved. It is much like a home for them.
