My students come from many places & some know many different cultures. They are hard-working, capable, & some are really brilliant -- but they don't speak English. They come with big dreams of a bright future, but can't respond to even simple requests. They are scared, vulnerable & often so very confused & frustrated. They are expected to succeed in an English-speaking world. In my ESL class I facilitate bravery. I make it a point to have a safe place where students can give their best plus a little bit more each day. When we realize that what we are doing is hard, I make sure that they know they can do hard things. So we do! No matter the student, the culture, or the level of English, there is always a need for addressing specific deficits for each child. Some of what is helpful is to have resources made available for custom-fit instruction for each one. Help me provide resources for this next generation.
