Kindergarten students need to be exposed to a variety of vocabulary words and different types of print as they learn to read. Students from welfare homes will be exposed to four times less words than students from college educated, professional families. Often, the words that my students are exposed to are negative or inappropriate.
I need to bridge that gap by offering a print rich classroom. Bright, visible vocabulary words will help expose students to new words that will build the background knowledge that they are missing from home and will also provide the foundation of reading skills that they will need to be successful in life. This can all be accomplished using a printer in our classroom!
