In the age of private coaching, select teams, and name brand equipment, it seems that the student athletes that excel or find the avenue to succeed in sports are the ones that already have every other opportunity in life. We know the rate of sports participation has a direct relationship to family income. For our school, the demographics consist of 560 students, of which 53% are on free and reduced meals. We as a coaching staff have to fight just to get students out and participating, let alone compete at a level as some of their affluent peers. Our students are needing a chance, an incentive to give them confidence to do something that otherwise would be out of their reach. We have seen time and time again, that once we reach those students that sports can have a profound impact on their lives and now we just need tools to be able to encourage and entice those students who have been the most reluctant.
