Using technology in mathematics is essential for understanding difficult concepts. Graphing calculators are an amazing resource to visualize these concepts and make them come to life. I teach my students how to use them as juniors in precalculus and they can apply these skills when they practice for and then take the official SAT in the Spring. Then as seniors in AP Calculus they use the calculators to solve problems in the calculator active Multiple Choice and Free Response sections of the AP exam. My students are exposed to AP exam level questions every single day. Unfortunately many cannot afford their own graphing calculator, so having a classroom set will be incredibly beneficial.
