Most of the students in my class come from a very impoverished part of town. There is not much consistency at home so when they come to school I want them to feel safe and loved. Today's youth are completely surrounded by electronic media. It is hard to get them to look at, talk about, or even think about anything else. But there is still something magical that happens whenever a child holds a book in his hands for the first time. When I sit in front of the class and read them one of my favorite picture books, the kids come alive. When I'm finished reading a book to the class, they want to get their hands on that book so they can practice reading it themselves. I work in a great school. It's truly like family. The kids are so sweet. I would describe the school as a community of educators who work really hard for the kids that come through the doors every day.
