Having creative ways to have students engage in the material is a great way to get the students to start discussions. These books provide the prompts that I can give the students and then break them into groups based on their answers. Once there, the students can work together to create reason and evidence for their choices.
Then, the student groups will defend their position against the other groups in order to practice claim and evidence debates. In science, I emphasize the importance of having reason for what you say and do. The prompts in these books and the assessments it gives allow us to practice that skill.
