My school is a small high school located in a rural area of southern New Mexico, with a student population over 80% Hispanic and a relatively high poverty rate.
Students face many challenges relating to improving their skills in reading and writing. For one thing, many students have parents who either did not graduate from high school or who did not pursue any education past high school. Because of this, they students did not have an early start in reading at home or do not have parents who can help them when they need assistance in reading comprehension. With the lack of reading skills, students often do not develop good writing organizational skills or a good writing voice.
Another issue with some of my students is a lack of focus, due in part to a desire to be active. Some students experience this because of their age; others, because they have ADHD or other such conditions.
