The students in my program are under-performing. They are at least a full year behind their peers academically. There are many reasons for this achievement gap, but one primary reason is the high poverty rate. Families want to be involved in the education of their children, but do not know how. Many parents do not speak English and many others have never graduated high school themselves. Our students are familiar with the challenges and struggles of daily life - worrying often times about where their next meal will come from. With these obstacles, students look to school as a safe haven, a place where they will be valued and feel successful.
