My school is a large high school with an extremely diverse student population. As a Title I school with around 4,000 students, class sizes are very large. My classroom was built for 25 students, however I have 40 in each class period. Catering the diverse learning styles in my room is a daily challenge that requires creativity and ingenuity. The demographic is predominantly students of color who are from low-income families, they have different personal and educational backgrounds that influence how they engage in the class. Just like most kids ages 13-18, my students are very attached to their cell phones which is is affecting their abilities to interact personally with one another and share ideas in a respectful way. Among my students there is a vast array of experiences, interests, and strengths that can make for a rich learning environment. I want my students to take advantage of the multicultural classroom they are in by drawing on each others skills and backgrounds.
