My students come to me with a multitude of issues: they can have a learning disability, language barrier, have been to various elementary schools and never received a continuous reading program, or just be a struggling reader. My students are Title One students which mean over 70% qualify for free lunch.
My classroom is very diverse with African American, Latino and Asian and Caucasian students. There are more boys than girls, but all need reading assistance. My students are funny, tough, shy, outrageous, sweet and typical middle school students. No two days are ever the same. They are challenging and sometimes maddening but always in the end rewarding and worth every second of time I get to spend with the them. Our student body is almost a true melting pot with a blending of races and ethnicities. The one thing they all have in common is even though there is extreme poverty in our school, there also is extreme determination and drive. It is a privilege to work with them and watch them grow.
