Tables promote so many good things in a classroom that desks cannot. Tables encourage teamwork. Flexible seating gives students opporunities to work with different children on different tasks. This promotes differentiation at its finest. Tables help give the classroom a more personal feeling, where kids have more input on where they sit. This, in turn, affects their morale and creates a positive place for students to learn. Tables give opporunities for inquiry-based learning, where students can work together to enhance their learning.
A classroom is more organized when having tables versus the desk, or "the pit" as I tend to call it. A community is created when sharing/taking care of materials. Jobs are set for each table so that each student has a responsibility for keeping the room and areas organized. Unfinished work is not shoved into the desk, but instead taken care of and finished.
I am so excited for the opportunity to create a community feel in my second grade classroom. I feel privileged to be given this opportunity, and I thank all who are able to help me in this venture!
