When second graders learn to silent read, they must learn to choose a book that is appropriate for their ability - meaning not to easy, not too hard. Dr. Seuss books are a high interest bridge to fluency, and the few that we have are always sought out in our classroom library.
I would suggest donated Dr. Seuss books to reluctant readers at our silent reading time.
I would also use donated books for buddy reading and listening activities for students with limited English speaking abilities. I will use donated books to teach mini-lessons in phonics skills, such as rhyming.
