Students need the encouragement of a variety of book to read. My students have lost their interest because their tastes have changed. With these new books, my students will become readers again.
People, especially kids, absorb new information quickly and they need inspiration to keep going. Graphic novels are not a new idea, but they have reached a group of students that came in to the school year not liking to read, to a group that cannot get enough. Just a simple change of chapter book to graphic novel. Imagine a classroom where students of poverty, high English language learners, and all are reluctant readers at the beginning of the year. Now imagine this same group of students asking for more books because I cannot keep enough books on the shelf. A group of students who would prefer to read versus going to recess, and when they go to recess there is a book in their hands while they are walking the playground or swinging on a swing. With these materials, my students will be given more books to read, and my hope is for them to walk away with a greater love of reading.
