It is essential for my class to have book club books. Unfortunately, my school district is unable to provide class sets so we need these books in order to have our book clubs. Each book club reads a book and collaborates on assignments related to the book: written assignments, projects, discussions, and more. This gives them the joy that stems from sharing their reading experiences with their peers. Additionally, all of the book club books tie back to a central theme for the unit which allows the book clubs to be integrated into a cohesive whole class learning experience as well.
Book clubs supplement whole class novel study. This way, students build literacy skills within both a smaller and a larger community.
