My students struggle with their academics, which is understandable when struggling with being able to stay focused. Whether they are trying to stay awake due to their home life, lack of exercise, and their lack of good nutrition, or having a need to move due to their ADD or ADHD, standing desks can help with all these areas.
When teachers tell students to sit and be quiet all day, we are wounding and disabling our students. Students need movement and a standing desk allows for this movement which then allows more oxygen to enter the brain. They can wiggle and fidget all they need and still be focused on the instruction at hand without hurting their backs trying to bend over their regular desk or moving about the room disrupting others.
My plan is to have the students use the standing desks while working in small groups with me. There will also be standing desks available for students to move to at any other part of the day as they feel the need to do so. Nobody will be standing all day unless that is what they choose to do.
