Welcome to above the Arctic Circle from a real Alaskan Bush Teacher! Our school serves Athabaskan Gwich'in Tribal Members in a small remote village. The mighty Yukon River & 200 miles of mountainous terrain are between us and the nearest store. The only way here is by a small bush plane with heroic pilots! Imagine being deep in the rugged wilderness, dog-sleds instead of cars, living in a rustic log cabin without running water, & heated by a wood stove. Add HUGE Grizzly bears & wolves! Picture students so excited about learning that they WALK 1/2 miles or more, in the dark, deadly -50 degrees below zero temperatures, to come to school. My precious little ones arrive with delicate frosted eyelashes, frozen face masks, and rosy red cheeks every day. Under those ice covered masks there are huge bright smiles, and I am greeted with,"Hi Ms. Terri! What are we going to learn today?" I totally melt every morning and smile!
