With our school's goal to increase our students' social emotional well-being, we have recently started a yoga program every Monday at lunch to promote meditation, mindfulness, and physical and mental health. While students have currently been meeting in our gym for yoga, we lack the necessary materials to have our yoga program truly flourish. Students are currently on older and thicker gym mats that are not conducive for yoga, and some of our students have to remain on the gym floor. We also lack the yoga blocks or straps that allow our program to be more accessible. Having these materials will allow more students to participate in our weekly program and create a safer space with additional supports and accommodations for all yoga levels.
Yoga helps students learn healthy coping mechanisms to combat anxiety, depression, or social distress. Having these materials at our school will allow us to expand our program and give our students safer and more comfortable conditions.
It is clear that our schools need more programs that focus on the mental health and general well-being of our students so they can be more successful within their studies and feel a greater sense of belonging at their school. Thus, providing this program is giving our students the much needed tool to practice their own self-care and emotional and physical well-being.
