Donations to this project will help our students become more organized and prepared to become skillful readers and writers at home and at school. The materials of the project are designed to meet all of the students’ need as individuals and as a collaborative group during small group and large group instruction.
The materials are integrative tools that would be useful for all students regardless of their various differences, hardships, and experiences. The pocket charts have multiple uses within the classroom. In a whole group setting, pocket charts provide a structured, visible device for students to see sentence structure, various genres of writing, songs, and chants. In small groups or individually students are able to use pocket charts to practice their language skills and sort information. Likewise, handwriting is an important beginning skill for kindergarten students. Due to the area, many of our students have not had the opportunity to hold a pencil. Thus, tools, such as the guiding pencil grips, show students how to consistently hold a pencil correctly. As students become more comfortable with the tool they can expand their writing and drawing skills to be able to express their thoughts and experiences. The Calendar Math Activity Center incorporates both mathematical and language arts skills for students to gain an understanding of skills needed in further grades and in life.
As students become more confident in the basic skills of reading, writing, and mathematics, they can grow, share their skills, and become successful students and community members. We will use these materials daily in all areas of our curriculum. The flexibility of the materials allow for students to take charge of their own learning and use the materials to facilitate their own learning, as well as use the material as a collaborative whole group.
