As a teacher in a New York City Public School in a first grade ICT classroom setting, with 32 students with various learning needs, meeting the needs of all students can be a difficult task to accomplish. 40% of my students have a wide variety of learning disabilities that include sensory issues, speech delays, autism and ADHD which impede on their ability to learn on a daily basis. Unfortunately various supports that would cater to their individual needs are not cost efficient and the school I currently work in doesn't have money within their budget to purchase such items.
My students all struggle with various sensory issues and require constant movement in order to successfully complete tasks. With the use of the stability boards, students will be able to sit for longer periods of time. They will be able to sit and complete a writing assignment, while constantly being stimulated and better focus on the work that is to be completed. Being in a class of 32 children, at times students may become over stimulated and become upset and frustrated. With the use of the weighted star fish pillows, students will be able to calm down. self regulate and take a break if necessary. The pillow can also turn into a wearable blanket which would be soothing for a child who is experiencing discomfort or anxiety in the classroom. I have several students that need constant breaks in order to make it through the school day comfortably. Although the breaks are necessary, important instructional time is often missed. With the use of the wobble chair and fidget toys students will be able to focus on their work more without losing valuable classroom time.
