I am so happy and fortunate to teach social studies. It brings me such joy to share my passion with my amazing students, however, I feel that I could expose my students to so much more if I had access to just one iPad.
For some students, social studies can be really challenging; I strive to reach these students and bring history to life. I am so lucky to have access to a smart board in my classroom. I incorporate this into my lessons almost every day. That being said, I know that there is more I can do to engage my students.
With an iPad in my classroom I would have the ability to sync the iPad with the smart board and download apps that teach map reading skills. My students could learn to think like a historian. We could go through the history channel to play trivia games or watch primary source video footage of the topics we are learning. My students would be able to go further than a google search or a photo in a text book and I could use it to build a technology based curriculum tailored to the standards we are learning about.
It would allow us to go further than the limitations of the smart board and I could really show my students why I love history. I can't tell you the joy it would bring me to take my students on a virtual tour of the Smithsonian, or to use google earth to show them what the ruins from Ancient Rome look like from the street.
With your help I can teach theses students to explore the world from my classroom, I can teach them invaluable research skills and I can bring a new level of engagement to my class.
