Next school year our school was selected to be a pilot school for a new literacy program in our district. One of the requirements is of course a classroom library for independent reading. My goal is to build it with leveled books, English and Spanish. My vision is to have one of those organized libraries that I have seen in pictures and are so beautiful that students will really enjoy and be eager to go to, not because they have to, but because they love it.
For this project we need leveled books but also furniture to organize the books. Having zero shelves in my classroom, last year I bought two shelves myself. One in a garage sale, the other new, but I did not assemble it correctly and when I tried to put it in my car, it broke into pieces! I tried to put it back together with simple nails and a hammer and now is kind of crooked. I also used an old TV stand to put books on. We definitely would love to have at least two good quality shelves, one for our English library and one for the Spanish library. I would like them to be "short" for easy access and easy return of the books. This will allow my students to be not only independent readers but also independent in the handling and organization of the library.
