Science is an important topic in fifth grade and students are eager and excited to learn. The Next Generation Science Standards are requiring our students to be creative and problem solvers. My students are up for the challenge, but I am lacking good materials. The STEM Bundle and non-fiction books will allow my students the opportunities they need to research topics, explore and test their ideas, and work toward becoming 20th century problem solvers. The real world math activities will give them additional opportunities to practice this skill and transfer their knowledge from one subject to the next. I plan to use the STEM Bundles in small, cooperative groups allowing the students to chose topics of interests and then report back to the class on their findings. The camera will allow my students to take pictures of their steps and present their entire project as a slideshow, from beginning to end. The real world math activities will be used by my advanced students as extension activities and by my struggling students in a small group with an aide to allow them see how important math is and how it applies to the world around us.
Benjamin Franklin said, "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." This is the wonderful change that Common Core is bringing about; really involving our students in the learning process.
Your generous donation to this project will help support a creative and hands on approach to teaching and learning the new science and math standards.
