We are turning our 5th grade English/ Language Arts class into a personalized learning space, where kids will be able to complete work on the computer, to get individualized assignments and feedback, and to have more choice in how they learn. We have received a generous grant to get laptops for all of our students and I have been hard at work figuring out how to make our curriculum flexible and responsive to children's needs.
The last piece of the puzzle is creating a classroom space that offers choice and responds to students' needs. Research has demonstrated that all people, students as well as adults, are happier and more productive when they can move around and be comfortable. In the spirit of personalized learning, we want to offer the children a variety of seating options, ball chairs, beanbags, support pillows, a foam couch and clipboards, and a learning space that offers more than a standard desk and chair.
