This is my first year teaching. While in college I did some awesome research on the benefits of functional seating with in special education. It allows the students to make a choice when it comes to their education.
To allow the students to have control over their education is not something that happens as much as is should.
When students are allowed to make a decision about their education it starts to build the connection needed to ensure educational learning to occur.
Functional seating will allow my students to get the sensory breaks that they need to be able to be better learners. I will also help the students who have ADHD in my classroom to be able to listen to the classroom discussion and be able to keep moving at the same time. A traditional classroom desk chair would not allow the students to be able to do this.
Since all of my instruction happens at a small group level I will be using all of the functional seating options at one time. The students will be able to move to different functional seating options while they are in my classroom. This could be at the kidney table working wth me, at the carpet during group discussion or at the classroom library while they are doing independent work. These new seating options will allow my classroom to become an environment set up for learning for my students with unique learning needs.
