Donations towards this project will provide students with a comfortable carpet to sit on to optimize readers' workshop. They will have their individual spots on the carpet and a set routine in their reader's space. Great management facilitates lot's of learning! During the workshop, students come to the carpet with their notebooks prepared for a mini-lesson in reading. After the mini-lesson, when students are ready, they go back to their desks to individually practice the new skill. Having this reading space on the carpet allows for more kinesthetic movement, positive procedures and a Lucy Calkins reading model that has been proven to work. Reader's workshop model is also an already established model in previous grades.
Having set procedures and routines in the classroom builds community and helps to provide a safe environment, while maximizing learning time in the classroom.
It is especially important to provide this structure for 5th graders as they prepare for more independence in middle school. Not only helping them get their reading skills up, but also to inspire the love of life long learning.
