These short and engaging texts will help my students understand and apply grammar skills in their reading and writing. Our current curriculum is lacking to provide interesting grammar lessons for students. It is extremely cut and dry with an absence of fun to keep the students engaged during the lessons. Instead of researching and finding lessons on my own, I have found a wonderful method that is not only intriguing for my students, but will also allow students to retain the information they learn.
In my classroom from this year on, I want to give my students the opportunity to be exposed to quality reading texts while also learning how to apply grammar skills properly in their own writing. I attended a webinar about mentor texts this summer and absolutely fell in love with this teaching method! By reading a short story filled with pictures, students are engaged while the book is being read to them. Instead of moving on from the story after a short discussion, we will be diving into the book over and over again in order to focus on various parts of it. We will discuss aspects like genres, writing styles, different sentence structures, and many other grammatical concepts. Then students will be able to apply what we have discussed and learned to their own writing to allow them to construct a writing style of their own. This is by far one of the best methods I have seen to teach grammar and writing skills to students. I truly want my students to succeed in their writing and grammar skills through this amazing method!
