English-language learners are a growing population in New York City public schools as well as dual language programs. As a teacher I am always looking for effective ways to support these learners and help them achieve. Through my research I've discovered that iPad's are the ideal device for personalizing learning and strengthening language skills to ensure student success. Many of my students have limited access to a quality use of technology. We currently do not have any iPads in our classroom and only two desktops.
iPads can be used in every subject area as a whole group, small group, or independently, They are easily accessible to ALL learners and highly interactive, engaging, and exciting. There are a variety of apps that accommodates every student’s academic needs. Students will be working, or as they think- playing, on apps that will strengthen comprehension, letter name and sound identification, fluency, and math skills such as counting, adding, subtracting, and solving word problems. With the right tools, monitoring and documenting reading fluency growth can be engaging and meaningful for my students. Recording reading progress and capturing data helps them self-assess and develop decoding and reading comprehension skills.
The students think they are just playing a game, when in reality they are practicing important skills. A set of iPads would provide endless opportunities to learn, grow, and explore daily in the classroom.
