The vision for my classroom is centered around creating authentic learning experiences through student choice and hands on problem solving. After much research and reading I fell in love with the idea of flexible seating. Much of last year, I allowed my students to sit where they wanted while working, allowing them to take ownership and responsibility of their learning. However, with limited resources, it became difficult to meet the needs of all the students in my class.
I want to begin instilling self-regulation skills through the use of student choice in my classroom. As adults we are not limited or told what is most comfortable to us. I believe that by allowing students to make the choice of where to sit while they read or work, they will be empowered to take ownership of their learning, feel more comfortable to take risks, and be more connected to the community of the classroom.
I want to be able to provide my students with various options that will fit their diverse needs. I am asking for various seating options such as pillows to sit or lay on the floor, a saucer chair for a comfy spot, and stability balls and cushions for my learners that need a little extra movement. I am also asking for stools for my round tables to create more space in my classroom and easier mobility to change the classroom when needed.
