My students need classroom sets of novels, so that they don't have to share books. Since I teach 9-12th grade English, I need a variety of types of novels as well as a variety of reading levels. In previous years, the students were split into groups and each group picked their own novel. While literature circles are a great supplemental learning activity, it is impossible to have whole classroom discussions if everyone is not reading the same book. If my students have their own copy of the novel we are all reading, it allows for whole classroom discussion, and they can practice their close reading skills by taking their novels home for annotating and independent reading. Adding young adult literature to our classroom library will also help me to engage reluctant readers.
Your donation will help my students become more engaged readers as well as better readers. Students will be able to read at their own pace which will encourage those students that may be lagging in their reading comprehension skills.
