The majority of my students, both male and female, are yet to have completed a book from beginning-to-end. Pair this with the predominantly Hispanic and poverty-stricken neighborhood these students live in, it is not exactly a wonder that they have performed so poorly in state assessments. During these exams the expectation is to read for 3+ hours/day (reading, math and science tests) for a total of twelve days. One second they're reading about the Louisiana Purchase the next it's the habitat of a lynx family in the Caucuses. These kids do not have the stamina to independently read for such a prolonged time.
Thats where the books come in. Over the past year I've compiled a nice collection of No Fear Shakespeare and other fun readings. My logic is the more the merrier and these extra class sets of books (To Kill a Mockingbird and The Great Gatsby) will allow more variety, more themes, and more availability for taking books home.
