Our students love getting exercise, moving their bodies and exerting their endless energy! However, at our small school located in East Boston this becomes increasingly difficult in the cold, snowy and rainy winter months as we do not have a physical gym. Our building is a old and our space is limited. When the weather permits we are outside in our schoolyard enjoying the fresh air. When the weather does not allow, it is quite tricky to help our students get the exercise their growing bodies truly need!
In order to help students work on strength, flexibility, balance, heart health and mental health I plan to teach my students meditation and yoga. Yoga is one of the few activities that is feasible in our small classrooms where I teach gym during winter months. The materials I order will allow me to teach healthy exercise habits and social/ emotional skills that will be helpful throughout our students' lives. Yoga will also help our students learn to be present with themselves, observing and accepting their emotions and feeling. In the busy, over-scheduled world we live in today these skills are essential to a happy and healthy life!
