Each year in our sixth grade classroom, students start the year by reading a fun, exciting, and adventurous novel called Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. This novel opens up the world of Greek mythology to students. Just like students, the main character Percy in the book struggles with things like trouble in school, friendship, and family dynamics. Through all of these struggles, Percy has a desire to save the day and help the ones he loves. Students absolutely love starting off the year with this book, and for some students, it sparks a new love of reading. Our classrooms have been filled with rich discussions about the obstacles and challenges Percy faces, how he responds to them, as well as all of the allusions to Greek mythology. However, over the years our set of books at school have become tattered, ripped at the seams, and are even falling apart after so many students have had the chance to enjoy the same book. This year we are hoping to give the gift of new books to our students so that they can truly engage in this exciting novel. Through reading this book, students learn so much more than Greek mythology. They learn how to persevere through personal problems, help their friends, family, and community, as well as morals that they can carry throughout their lives.
