It is incredibly difficult to help my students become thoughtful and reflective readers without a classroom library. My students deserve access to books of varying genres and reading levels so that they can increase their reading capabilities and their confidence. Gifting this classroom library to my very deserving students will give them the opportunity to experience different types of literature. This will increase their individual reading levels and expand their knowledge base. They will learn about topics and people that they may not have the exposure to in their own lives. Not only will they read, but they will reflect and respond to the reading in a variety of creative ways.
I have chosen several different collections as part of this project to offer my students an opportunity to read different genres. In order to effectively organize the new library, I have also included storage carts and bins to keep our library in great working order. Students will be able to quickly find books that are an appropriate reading level and genre. My classroom lacks any built in shelving and that is why I added storage bins and carts to my project. Also included in my project are some of the materials my students need to react to and reflect on their reading. These reflections will utilize a variety of materials. The sentence strips will be utilized by my students to write their own simple book reviews to hang in the library. The journals will allow students an opportunity to reflect on their reading in a more private way.
