When students are actively engaged in their learning, they are increasingly more likely to be able to recall that information. My project will be used as an enrichment activity within the math and science classroom to reinforce learning that has already taken place. Students will be given the opportunity to learn through "play" by using board games to reinforce the concepts we study in class.
When students learn through play they are nearly 100% engaged in their academic pursuits, while having fun. I plan on using the math and science board games to enrich our normal study of the units, particularly as review prior to a test. I have carefully chosen games that align with 5th grade Florida math and science standards, to be utilized during those units of study and prior to our statewide assessments.
As an example, Laser Maze will allow students a hands on way to learn about light energy, including the hard-to-grasp concepts of reflection and refraction. The Evolution and Extinction series reinforce natural selection concepts and adaptations, and allow students a way to test different adaptation strategies in a "wild" setting to explore effectiveness. Three sticks generate creative thinking while engaging students in geometric exploration which is heavily covered on the state assessment. Other math games allow students to practice basic math skills such as multiplication and division in a low stakes way, reinforcing essential skills for 5th grade math and beyond. Most importantly, for all games, students get to have fun while they learn!!
